STRUCTURE FIRE
9/2/10 - West Chazy, NY - At 0139 Chazy Volunteers were woken by their pagers reporting a structure fire at D & D Meats in Sciota. West Chazy Volunteers and Clinton County Car 4 were dispatched at the same time as automatic mutual aid. First on the scene was Chazy EMS Captain Dan Harriman and West Chazy officer Ricky Morrison, reporting heavy smoke with no visible flame. Shortly after, Captain Harriman reported flames showing and promptly dispatched Mooers and Altona Volunteers for tankers. First arriving unit was West Chazy 336, followed by West Chazy 331 and Chazy 152. Tanker 336 setup on the south side of the structure, while Engine 152 took the north side. Engine 331 setup a portable pond and served as water supply pumper. Chazy Engine 151 proceeded to a fill site on the Gonyea Rd and provided uninterrupted water supply. At this point, the fire was being isolated in the aging structure. Tower 359 was dispatched from District #3 and was used to begin the arduous task of accessing the second story roof in order to further isolate the fire. Aerial 397 from St. Paul Quebec was also dispatched to attack the roof from the north side of the structure. Apparatus and/or manpower was received from the following departments: Altona, Beekmantown, Champlain, Chazy Auxiliary, Ellenburg Depot, Mooers, Rouses Point, West Chazy, District #3, Alburg, VT, St. Paul, QC, and Mooers Air Response 25-AIR. Chazy Chief Cahoon estimates that there were between 75 and 100 firefighters on scene battling the stubborn blaze. Swift response led to the main residence being spared any fire or water damage. NY State OFPC was summoned to conduct the fire investigation, and they arrived shortly before 9am. Chazy units were back in service by 4pm. Chazy Volunteer Fire Department wishes to thank all those who assisted battling this early morning fire. Consider it a job well done!
